Poet Interview: Dhavita Filek
So, anyone who gets my newsletter is probably a little familiar with Dhavita! She is the writer of ‘Seeds of Truth’ every week in my newsletter which is full of heart touching, soul gripping advice/truths. I’m so very excited for everyone to get to know her more because I truly think she is one of the most incredible people I have ever come across! She has been inspiring me so much in the past few months and I know she could do the same for you! So please, continue reading and get to know this incredible soul a bit better!
ReBecca: I have to ask this, always! Did you always want to write?
Dhavita: Nope. Not at all. I never identified as a writer. I have always loved to read but never really wrote anything outside of school until I deepened my meditation practice and words started pouring out of me.
ReBecca: Wow! That’s incredible! I’m sure it was quite a shock to you at first to have the desire to write and now, identify as a writer!
R: What inspires you?
D: Everything. When I am present in the moment I find inspiration everywhere. That’s the beauty of awareness and one of the main reasons why I continue to meditate daily.
R: What are your favorite topics to write about?
D: Emotions. Healing. Motherhood. Femininity.
R: This made me smile…such beautiful topics!
R: What does your creative process look like? When you’re writing…Music? Silence? Night? Day?
D: I have a love/hate relationship with my creativity. It strikes without warning and I feel intense urges to get whatever is inside of me out. This can sometimes be inconvenient but always worth it. If I try to ‘sit’ and write, often, nothing will come through.
R: Laptop, pen and paper, typewriter, phone?
D: Phone. While juggling two babies.
R: Haha! I feel this so much…
R: What would you say is your most interesting quirk?
D: I believe in magic.
R: I absolutely love this about you!
R: Let’s talk mom life… How do you manage your time with kids and all of your current projects? You have the Reconnect Halifax event coming up, you just did a podcast with Kim over at Mind Your Vibe, you work with me on a weekly basis writing “The Seeds of Truth” as well as running your Instagram page.. Busy mama!
D: I get asked all the time how I ‘manage’ and truthfully, I don’t know how I managed life before kids and my writing. My life was so two dimensional it’s no wonder I was depressed. Everything in my life now is so enriching, fulfilling, and satisfying that I can’t remember what I used to do with all my time! This doesn’t mean I don’t have hard days. Two babies and a husband who travels has stretched and tested me in ways I could never expect. I remind myself daily that everything is temporary so I need to love the good while it’s here and sit with the difficult as it passes.
R: Yes!! This is such a beautiful perspective. I love it so much!
R: You write about a lot of important topics! Including healing, self love, motherhood, and more. What brought you to these specific topics?
D: Postpartum depression. I had spent my life waiting for the next thing to make me happy and my experience with PPD taught me to look within and I’ll find everything I need. Looking within is painful and messy but it leads to beautiful things!
R: Writing a book another book? Tell us a little about it!
D: Yes! It will be released in 2020. This is the first “official” announcement! I’ll be introducing it on social media this October. This book has such a different tone than my last. The energies I’ve connected with while writing it are intense and I cannot wait to share it. R: Wow!! I feel so honored that you chose to tell me about it!! I’m so excited for you and can’t wait to read it!
R: How did you feel while writing your first book?
D: Like I was shedding millions of layers in order to reach the core of me.
R: This sounds so intense and healing…
R: Are you happy with how it’s done now that it’s been out in the world for a while? How people have responded to it, etc?
D: I wrote “Purification” for no one but myself. To have it so openly received and loved by other people has been one of the best things that’s ever happened to me. I wrote a book in the depths of depression and it’s bringing joy to other people. That’s fucking incredible.
R: Yes!! That is so incredible!
R: How has your meditation practice helped you within your creative journey?
D: My meditation practice IS my creative journey. Looking inward daily is how I connect to my infinite potential- the same infinite potential that resides in all of us.
R: What are some of your passions outside of writing/poetry?
D: Meaningful relationships, trying new things (recently painting), and consuming all things spiritual/esoteric.
R: Any tips for new writers?
D: Write about all the stuff you don’t want anyone to know.
R: YES! This is amazing advice!
R: What you think about the Instagram Writing/Poetry community? How did you get started on Instagram?
D: I think it’s a very loving and supporting community! I’ve met some incredible people through social media. Some are halfway across the world and some I get to see in real life! I was always very against social media. I thought it was a cesspool of low self worth. As with everything, my perspective created my reality. When I decided to join social media in early 2019 I had the intention of authentic connection and that’s what I’ve been receiving!
R: I’m so happy that you got what you were looking for!
R: Do you believe in writer’s block?
D: Any type of creative block is an emotional block. Feel your feelings and you won’t be able to stop the flow of creativity. Meditation is how I do this but there are many other modalities out there.
R: Favorite book?
D: This changes every few months. Right now it’s ‘Wild Power’ because it’s completely changed the way I see femininity.
R: Favorite author?
D: JK Rowling. The Harry Potter series was such a cornerstone of my childhood. She helped me remember that magic is real.
R: A book that made you cry?
D: ’Love you Forever’ by Robert Munsch. I bought it while pregnant with my first child and I can’t get through it without sobbing.
R: What is your mission?
D: To be the most me I can be.
R: I just adore this and you. What a beautiful note to end this interview on…
